WV 598 was once the routing of US 21/52 from Bluefield in to Virginia
until the East River Mountain Tunnel and I-77 was completed in the 1970s.
Sometime in 2002 or 2003, WV 598 was extended along US 460 East to end
at US 52.

The original end of WV 598 was here at the intersection with US 460 in
Bluefield. WV 598 now continues east along US 460 to end at US 52
a few miles further.

After a long climb up the East River Mountain, WV 598 ends when it crosses
the Virginia line. There is a rest area with a great overlook of
Bluefield and the valley below. WV 598 continues as VA 598 after
crossing the state line.

The Southern Terminus of VA 598 is at Interstate 77 and US 52 near Rocky
Gap. There is not an 'END' VA 598 sign present. H.B. took a
photo of the shields at the end of the I-77 North ramp.
