PA 8

North End: Erie
South End: Wilkinsburg/Forest Hills (US 30)
Business PA 8: Oil City
Truck PA 8: Titusville

Editors Note:  PA 8 has had numerous southern endpoints in the Pittsburgh area since the 1940's.  It has ended at PA 51 after crossing the West End Bridge in Pittsburgh.  It has ended at US 19 and PA 65 in the Manchester neighborhood of Pittsburgh.  It then ended at PA 28 near Etna.  It then would cross the Allegheny River for the first time and end at US 30 (I-376/US 22) in Wilkinsburg/Forest Hills.

The Northern Terminus of PA 8 is at US 20 in Erie.  US 20 is the home of numerous PA State Route ends in Erie County. Six state routes and 2 US Highways end along US 20's brief stay in Pennsylvania.
Business PA 8 Oil City:

The two photos below show the Northern and Southern Termini of Business PA 8 in Oil City.  PA 8 mainline bypasses the town of Oil City.  The distance between termini on PA 8 is 2/3rds of a mile.

Truck PA 8 Titusville:

Truck Route PA 8 Runs in Titusville.  The Northern Terminus is at PA 8 and 27.

David Brunot got photos of both ends of Truck 8, and some additional information about the area: "Ok, here it goes...  As you approach Titusville from Oil City on PA 8 NORTH, you come to the junction with PA 8 TRUCK and PA 27 TRUCK.  In this photo the sign assembly on the left is facing northbound PA 8.  The sign assembly on the right is facing the end of TRUCK PA 8 southbound.  With the layout of PA 8 through Titusville, there is only a need for westbound TRUCK PA 27.  If you continue north on PA 8, the first light is one way to the right (east PA 27).  The second light is one way to the left which is PA 27 WEST and PA 8 NORTH.  Continuing straight at that intersection is PA 89 NORTH."

The Southern Terminus of PA 8 is at US 30 and Interstate 376 in Wilkinsburg/Forest Hills.  PA 8 over the past 40 years had seen its terminus jump from the West End Bridge, to Route 28 in Etna, to finally over the Allegheny through Pittsburgh's east neighborhood and into Wilkinsburg ending at the Parkway.  Approaching PA 8 North from, US 30 West, Route 30 leaves to join I-376 and US 22 into Pittsburgh.  Route 8 then begins.

Route 8 is carried along Ardmore Blvd through Wilkinsburg.  Once PA 8 crosses underneath the bridges, US 30 East will begin after leaving the Parkway.  This is the last PA 8 South sign.  Until recently there was not an 'END' sign present at the terminus.

In 2003, an 'END' sign was posted.  Below, are close-ups of the LWS's noting the end of PA 8.

The photo from Bruce Cridlebaugh (right) shows the first LWS for PA 8 at the same location.  The 'END SEG' means US 30 is no longer the State Highway of record for this road (Ardmore Blvd.). US 30 continues West on I-376 ending this segment of US 30.  The Bees caught the END SR for PA 8.
