PA 48 has a special connection to these pages as I grew up on PA 48 in Elizabeth Township.

The Northern Terminus of PA 48 is at Business US 22 in Monroeville. At one time PA 48 ended about 1000 ft. further to the North @ I-376. However this route was truncated to BUS US 22 in the late 1990's.

Until the 1990s, PA 48 used to end at Beatty Road in the above intersection. The old northern terminus for PA 48 is only 3/4th of a mile further from the current day end. According to Denny Pine, the 'END' 48 sign was posted at where the current Orange Belt sign stands.

...the first PA 48 sign on its alignment. Interesting tidbit: Allegheny County's Orange Belt Begins/Ends at this location and the entire length of PA 48 is part of the Orange Belt. The Orange Belt loops around the outer reaches of Allegheny County before terminating at PA 88 in South Park.
