David Slauenwhite sends in a plethora of photos from the Northern Terminus
of PA 42 is at US 220 in Laporte.
PA 42 South begins on an uphill grade.

is also the Northern Terminus of Truck Route PA 42. Laporte is the
county seat of Sullivan County.
Truck PA 42:
As noted earlier, the Northern Terminus of PA 42 also serves as the Northern
Terminus of Truck PA 42. This route is multiplexed completely with
US 220 until PA 42 intersects US 220 nine miles to the south in Muncy Valley.
Below, the Southern Terminus of PA Truck 42. Both photos taken by
The Southern Terminus of PA 42 has a bit of modern history attached
to it. PA 42 ends at PA 61 in Centralia.
The town of Centralia is as close to a ghost town you can get. An
underground coal fire has closed the town, and the current population is
12. PA 54 and PA 61 were
realigned. PA 54 used to be multiplexed with PA 61 at this point
but PA 54 was moved further to the South. The former routes at the Southern
Terminus are shown below in this June 1996 still video image.
Fast forward to August 2001 and this is the scene...
As you can see the corner building still exists, however it is boarded
up. Also, all the surrounding buildings have been raised. Tim notes
that PA 61 through here is still noted as SR 54.
PA 54 follows the following routes:
Jump to April 2003, and the area is even more desolate.
PA 54 and PA 61 were once
duplexed along this stretch of PA 61. That explains the LWSs saying SR
54. The portion of PA 54 south of PA 61 is SR 2035, SR 901 (where duplexed
with PA 901), SR 2042, SR 3002 (Columbia Co.), and SR 4028 (Schuykill Co.).
PA 61 between its junctions with PA 54 and along the PA 54/PA 61 duplex
is SR 54. See http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?S=14&T=2&X=120&Y=1411&Z=18&W=2.
