PA 28

North End: Brockway
South End: Pittsburgh
Truck North End: Port Barnett
South Truck End: Brookville

The Northern Terminus of PA 28 is at US 219 in Brockway.  Barb and John Bee shot this photo.

Truck PA 28:

The North End of Truck PA 28 is at the I-80/PA 28 Interchange (Exit 81) near Port Barnett.  In the above photo, David Brunot is on PA 28 South.  There is not an 'END' sign posted here.  Below, David took a photo of the first Truck North 28 shield in Brookville.  The terminus is at the intersection of US 322/PA 28/PA 36.  What is interesting this is a rare Truck route that uses a 'Truck Route' banner versus a 'Truck' banner.

The Southern Terminus of PA 28 is somewhere along Pittsburgh's North Shore. To quote Jeff Kitsko, "You'd have an easier time finding Jimmy Hoffa and the lost continent of Atlantis than the [Southern] end of PA 28 ."

Well, Jeff checked with the state and the photo below is the Southern Terminus of PA 28.

The elevated freeway is I-279.  The terminus is at Anderson St. on Pittsburgh's North Side.

And if you don't believe Jeff, the Bees have a close-up photo of the LWS that notifies the end of PA 28.  Currently, there is not a standard 'END' sign present at the terminus.  Straight ahead is Lacock St. where there are still PA 28 South signs posted, which you can make out in the background to the right.  A closer shot of the left over South PA 28 shield from Denny Pine is below.

One of the possible or former ends of PA 28 is near the former location of Three Rivers Stadium.  Before the completion of the Ohio River Expressway, Beaver and Western Avenues intersected in the Manchester Neighborhood.  This 'Junction' PA 28 sign located on Beaver Ave. may be a remnant of a former southern terminus of PA 28.

Some leftovers from the past are seen in the above photo.  With Heinz Field as a backdrop, North Truck US 19 and North PA 28 shields still stand.  Truck US 19 has not been routed on surface streets on the North Side since I-279 opened in the early 90s.   This is the estimated time when PA 28 was truncated to Anderson St. as well.

Now, it appears that the south end of PA 28 is further 'south' than the north beginning.  It appears that PA 28 North begins where East Ohio Street meets I-279 and I-579.  The photo above shows a 'TO' North I-279/PA 28 shield combination on General Robinson Street.  To further stress, a series of guide signs approaching the interchange read 'TO' PA 28 North.  Examples are shown below.

(The Bee Family)

Here is a closer shot of the overhead guide sign that can be seen in the background of the I-279/PA 28 shield photo earlier.  The guide sign directs the outer two lanes towards I-279 and PA 28 North.

(The Bee Family)

The last set of guide signs, which are in the background of the photo above this one, still reads 'TO' PA 28 North.  Just when one mystery is solved - the end of PA 28 South - another one appears; "Where does PA 28 North actually begin?"  If you can figure this out, you know what to do.
