PA 272

North End: Adamstown South End: MD line near Nottingham

(Chris Daub)
The North endpoint is located in Adamstown where U.S. 222 and PA 272 meet once again for the final time.  This also marks the western end of PA 568.  PA 272 from Lancaster to this point was the former routing of US 222 until the US 222 freeway was completed from Lancaster to the PA Turnpike in the 1970s.  In 2006, US 222 was upgraded to a full freeway from the Turnpike to Reading.  Prior to this upgrade, the terminus was at a four-way intersection between US 222, PA 272, and PA 568.  Now, as shown in the photo above, the terminus is at a diamond interchange with the new US 222 freeway.

A side-by-side comparison of the 'END' assemblies for PA 272 from 2006 (left) and 2001 (right).  Amazing how different the area looks in five years.  Photos below show you how the intersection changed over time.  The actual 'END' assembly was moved closer to the physical terminus vs. at Bowmansville Road.

Now compare the first photo from 2001 to the one above from the summer of 2005.  It's the same intersection!  US 222 will soon be moved to the freeway that is carried on the overpass in the background.  PA 568 still continues straight ahead.

Maryland 272 crosses into Pennsylvania near Nottingham.  There was no end sign in place in the Southbound direction.

Just around the bend in the above photo is the first PA 272 shield.
