U.S. Route 20

Western Entrance: Indiana State Line, west of Columbia, Williams County. | Eastern Entrance: Pennsylvania State Line, Conneaut, Ashtabula County.

Western Entrance

US 20 departs the Buckeye State and enters into Indiana west of Columbia. This border crossing is 5 miles south of where the states of Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio meet at a single point. The green and white sign on the right side says ENTERING STEUBEN COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT.

The WELCOME TO INDIANA sign for US 20 stands 0.5 mile into the Hoosier State, right in front of the overpasses that carry I-80 / I-90, the Indiana Toll Road, over US 20. While US 20 is two lanes wide through here, these bridges were constructed to accomodate four lanes. Don reports that this is a common practice in Indiana, where Interstate bridges built over US routes are constructed to permit four lanes, even though the US route is only two lanes wide.

Eastern Entrance

This is the view of US 20 East as it crosses into Pennsylvania at Conneaut. The first US 20 East marker into the Keystone State can be seen here. In terms of the sign in front of the US 20 shield, the SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP sign refers to the township US 20 is entering into on the Pennsylvania side of the border. However, the END Bike Route J sign refers to the end of a bike route that is part of a system in the state of Ohio. Bike Route J begins in Marietta, and makes its way up the eastern part of the Buckeye State to US 20 at Conneaut, where it crosses the Pennsylvania State Line. More information about Bike Route J and other Ohio State Bike Routes may be found on the Ohio Cross State Bicycle Routes and ODOT Biking Ohio web sites.

The WELCOME TO PENNSYLVANIA sign on US 20 East is set about 0.1 mile back of the state line. Preceding that sign, however, is an EAST Bike Route Z sign. Ohio's Bike Route J directly connects into a Bike Route Z that is part of a statewide system of bike trails in Pennsylvania. Bike Route Z generally straddles US 20 and PA 5 along the Pennsylvania shore line of Lake Erie up to the New York State Line. More information about Bike Route Z can be found on the BicyclePA Route Z web page.

Meanwhile, this OHIO WELCOMES YOU sign stands on US 20 West as it crosses from Pennsylvania into Conneaut, Ohio.

Approximately 100 yards into the Buckeye State is a sign designating US 20 in Ohio as the General McPherson Memorial Highway, along with the first westbound reassurance marker. The placement of the directional banner on this assembly beneath the US 20 marker is non-standard for Ohio.
