Ohio Route 852

Southern Terminus: Kentucky State Line, 1 mile west of Portsmouth. | Northern Terminus: US 52 / OH 73 / OH 104, 1 mile west of Portsmouth.

Southern Terminus

OH 852 is a very short route which serves as the northern approach to a bridge spanning the Ohio River just west of Portsmouth. The Kentucky approach to this crossing of the Ohio is the un-signed KY 8 Spur. In this photo, David shows the starting point of OH 852 North on the bridge. A special sign on the overhead truss identifies this as the Carl Perkins Memorial Bridge. Currently, US 23 traffic is detoured onto the OH 852 / KY 8 Spur crossing of the Ohio River while a replacement for the former U.S. Grant Bridge is completed. The rather narrow suspension bridge opened in the early 1920s, and carried US 23 between South Portsmouth, Kentucky, and Portsmouth, Ohio. It was demolished in 2000. When the new suspension bridge opens in 2005, US 23 will enter into Ohio on a wider two-lane bridge with lanes twelve feet wide and shoulders ten feet in width.

Northern Terminus

The northern terminus of OH 852 is at an interchange with US 52 and OH 73 / OH 104, just west of Portsmouth. There is no END signage for OH 852 at this endpoint. However, there is this JCT OH 852 shield on the US 52 West approach to the interchange.
