Ohio Route 25

Southern Terminus: I-75, Cygnet, Wood County. | Northern Terminus: I-280, Toledo, Lucas County.

About OH 25

OH 25 generally follows the route of the former US 25 between Cygnet and downtown Toledo. In 1999, with the opening of the new Greenbelt Parkway, a four-lane divided roadway with a speed limit of 50 mph between downtown Toledo and I-280, OH 25 was extended northward from its former terminus at OH 51 up to the new Exit 11 off of I-280. As the photos in the Northern Terminus section show, no expense was spared in the installation of signage pointing to the new northern terminus of OH 25 along the local streets near there.

Southern Terminus

The southern terminus of OH 25 is at I-75 (Exit 171) in Cygnet. However, to get to its endpoint, OH 25 South follows an interesting path. First of all, the four-lane divided OH 25 narrows down to two lanes, and then hits a T-intersection with Cygnet Road. At this point, OH 25 turns eastward onto Cygnet Road. Once onto Cygnet Road, the access to I-75 South can immediately be seen. At this point, OH 25 makes a quick jog onto the I-75 South access road, a two-way road that connects to a side road, Insley Road, which parallels I-75 on the west side down to the next exit 3 miles to the south. Just after Insley Road, the ramp converts to one-way, and the END OH 25 shield can now be spotted, accompanied by an I-75 South shield.

The northernmost 5 miles of I-280 are in the process of being widened, as a part of a project that also includes a new span of the Maumee River. (For more information, please visit the Maumee River Crossing Project Site.) Incidentally, the northern abutment to the new cable-stayed bridge will be just south of the OH 25 interchange. In 2002, re-signing of I-280 took place from just south of the OH 25 interchange to I-75. This included the installation of some rather unique sign gantries and half-gantries that consist of a single bar rather than a sign truss. Said gantries and half-gantries are featured in these two photos, which show I-280 South as it approaches the starting point for OH 25 South. When construction of the new cable-stayed bridge across the Maumee is finished in 2005, I-280 will be opened up to three lanes in each direction through the area. Southbound, there will be four lanes entering into the OH 25 interchange, and the right lane will become exit only to OH 25 South.

The Greenbelt Parkway actually ends at Galena Street, just east of I-280. The ramps to and from I-280 North dump out onto Galena Street, which then connects with OH 25. Shown here is the signage leading up to the start of OH 25 South on Galena Street North, after the intersection with the ramps to and from I-280 North.

Meanwhile, here is the signage leading up to OH 25's northern terminus on Galena Street South. There are two interesting things to note about the arrow plate beneath the JCT I-280 shield. First, this particular arrow plate is compatible with a shield for a US or Ohio Route, but not necessarily for an Interstate shield. Second, both a straight ahead and a right arrow are used on the arrow tab. Straight ahead is the way to I-280 North, while I-280 South is accessible via OH 25 South.

Champlain Street intersects Galena Street two blocks south of the ramps to and from I-280 North, and four blocks south of OH 25's northern terminus. Prior to 1999, Galena Street did not continue north of Champlain Street, and Champlain Street dead ended on either side of I-280. With the opening of the Greenbelt Parkway, Galena Street was extended to tie into the OH 25 interchange, and an overpass was constructed to carry Champlain Street over I-280. However, when the cable-stayed bridge is finished in 2005, I-280 will then pass above Champlain Street! In accordance with the opening of the OH 25 extension in 1999, two sets of TO I-280 and TO OH 25 markers have been erected on Champlain Street East as it approaches Galena Street to direct traffic toward OH 25's northern terminus.

Ultimately, with the opening of the Greenbelt Parkway, Galena Street was extended north to Central Avenue, approximately 3 blocks north of OH 25. Accordingly, a new overpass of I-280 was constructed for Central Avenue. The northern end of Galena Street is also the eastern end of Central Avenue, where these two pairs of TO I-280 and TO OH 25 markers are located.
