Interstate 471 |
Southern Entrance |
The sign bridge shown here is mounted over northbound I-471 on the Kentucky approach to the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge, which carries I-471 across the Ohio River between Newport, KY, and downtown Cincinnati. I-471 only continues for 1 mile into Ohio before ending at I-71. Note that I-471's Kentucky exit numbers continue on into Ohio. |

These two photos the show sign bridges located on southbound I-471 on the Ohio approach to the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge. Note that a WELCOME TO KENTUCKY sign has been erected on the second sign bridge. I-471 continues for another 5 miles before ending at the I-275 Bypass of Cincinnati. |

Eastern Terminus |

The northern terminus of I-471 is in downtown Cincinnati, in an area which features a complex series of interchanges involving I-71, I-75, and US 50, which were reconstructed in 2001 and 2002. Northbound I-471 enters into this area as soon as it exits the Daniel Carter Beard bridge. The first three photos feature a progression of sign bridges along northbound I-471 before it merges into northbound I-71. That location features direct access from northbound I-471 to northbound I-71 and from southbound I-71 to southbound I-471 only. So, to access southbound I-71 from northbound I-471 or southbound I-471 from northbound I-71, use of US 50 (Columbia Parkway) is required. The first photo features the US 50 interchange; the exit sign should also note TO SOUTH I-71 besides TO I-75. Finally, just beyond the sign bridge featured in the third photo, is the merge of I-471 into I-71. |

Featured in these next two photos are overhead signs located on southbound I-471, immediately after it starts following its split from southbound I-71. The southbound lanes of I-71 are just to the left of the southbound I-471 lanes in these photos. |
From the perspective of northbound I-71, these signs announce the impending split of eastbound US 50 from northbound I-71, 0.5 mile from this point. Eastbound US 50 is the access to southbound I-471 from this direction. |
About 0.25 mile from the US 50 split from northbound I-71 is the overhead sign shown here pointing the way for traffic that will be using southbound I-471. |
Finally, the last sign bridge on northbound I-71 before the US 50 split features the lane assignments for the respective routes. |
Here is the perspective of the eastbound US 50 / northbound I-71 split from the eastbound I-71 frontage road. Note that the signage for US 50 on the frontage road refers to the connection to I-471 as "SOUTH I-471" rather than as "TO I-471". |

This is the overhead signage at the point where the exit ramp for southbound I-471 splits from eastbound US 50. |
These two photos depict the connector ramp from westbound US 50 to southbound I-471, which also provides access to downtown via 6th Street (the exit before the I-471 ramp) and 5th street, which continues straight ahead following the I-471 ramp. Note that the ramp gets two lanes, while the mainline US 50 only gets one lane at the split. |

US 42 (Reading Street) crosses I-71 immediately north of the northern terminus of I-471. This guide sign is located at the start of an on-ramp that directly connects to southbound I-471 from US 42. |
