Interstate 280 |
Southern Terminus |
The southern terminus of I-280 is at Exit 71 off of I-80 / I-90, the Ohio Turnpike, southeast of Toledo. This FREEWAY ENDS 1 MILE warning sign signifies the upcoming end of the line for I-280. |
An overhead exit sign announces the upcoming I-80 / I-90 exit on southbound I-280, 0.25 mile from the interchange. Note that the exit sign here uses I-80 and I-90 shields along with the text OHIO TURNPIKE TOLL ROAD, but the exit sign at the interchange itself (shown in the next photo) uses an OHIO TURNPIKE shield and control cities: Cleveland and Chicago. |
Here is the last gantry on southbound I-280, at the exit ramp to I-80 / I-90, which is carried on the bridge right behind the gantry. As the END I-280 BEGIN OH 420 sign on the left side indicates, this interchange also marks the start of southbound OH 420, a 2-mile, 4-lane divided expressway that connects to US 20 / US 23 at Lemoyne. |
A similar sign bridge to that from the southbound transition from I-280 to OH 420 stands on the northbound transition from OH 420 to I-280, in front of the I-80 / I-90 exit ramp on that side. Note that on this side, similar to the other side, there is a sign on the left side of the gantry saying END OH 420 BEGIN I-280. |
This overhead guide sign announces the upcoming I-280 / OH 420 interchange 1 mile ahead on westbound I-80 / I-90. The "5" tab above the exit sign denoted the former sequential-based exit number of the interchange prior to the changeover to mileage-based exit numbers that occurred in 1998. This tab was still up in June 2002; in late 2002, however, the tab was removed, and now all exits on the Ohio Turnpike are assigned a mileage-based exit number only. |
Northern Terminus |
I-280 has its northern terminus at I-75 in the northeastern part of Toledo. This END I-280 JCT I-75 guide sign was located on the sign bridge shown here, 1 mile from the interchange, as of June 2002. However, a trip on this stretch in October 2002 revealed that, due to reconstruction in the area, the sign truss has been removed, and has not been replaced. This is due to widening of the bridge that carries I-280 over OH 25, which is located just behind where this sign bridge was situated. |
The northernmost 5 miles of I-280 are being widened to 6 lanes. As a part of this project, the current drawbridge that carries I-280 across the Maumee River will be replaced with a new cable-stayed bridge, which is expected to be ready in 2005. As of October 2002, new signage appeared on the northernmost mile of I-280, from OH 25 to I-75. This includes the placement of unique sign gantries, such as the one shown here, which consist of a single bar, as opposed to a truss system. This one is located 0.5 mile from the I-75 interchange. Note that now, there is no control city for I-75 in the southbound direction; instead, it simply notes I-75 as a connector to I-475. |
The next new sign gantry is located in front of the Manhattan Boulevard exit ramp, which is just 0.1 mile from the I-75 split, seen in the background. The arrow on the sign which would point to the lane to southbound I-75 has been greened-out temporarily, until that lane is opened up. |
Here is the last gantry for I-280, at the split between the north and south I-75 ramps. |
This is the new, first I-280 shield in the southbound direction. |
This sign truss includes a guide sign announcing the upcoming I-280 interchange on northbound I-75, 1 mile from the exit. The signs are newer, and of the reflective variety. |
However, this overhead exit signage at the I-280 exit on northbound I-75, which was installed in 1998, is button-copy. O.D.O.T. began installing reflective guide signs in 2001. |
This sign bridge stands on southbound I-75, 1.5 miles in advance of the I-280 interchange, and just in front of the Ottawa River Road on-ramp overpass. Note that the I-280 sign uses I-80 and I-90 shields and TURNPIKE text, while the I-75 sign uses an OHIO TURNPIKE shield. Both I-280 and I-75 have full interchanges with I-80 / I-90. However, access via I-280 is recommended for eastbound Turnpike travelers, while access via I-75 is suggested for westbound Turnpike motorists. |
The next sign gantry with I-280 exit signage on southbound I-75 is 0.75 mile from the interchange. |
An interesting note about the signs on the third sign gantry for the I-280 interchange on southbound I-75, located 0.25 mile in front of the interchange, is that each one now features an OHIO TURNPIKE shield. |
Finally, here is the sign gantry at the I-280 interchange on southbound I-75. Until reconstruction in 1998, there was only 1 lane for southbound I-75 traffic until the ramp from northbound I-280 merged in. Now, 2 lanes are available. |
