Whalebone Junction, North Carolina....

One Intersection, Two US Highway Ends.....

(Adam Prince/Brian LeBlanc)

This sign on NC 12 South basically sums everything up.  NC 12 runs North/South along the Outer Banks.  It is the only 'survivor' of the intersection as it continues on in two directions.  However, with the opening of the Virginia Dare Bridge in late Summer 2002.  US 264's Eastern Terminus was truncated to the other side of  Croatan Sound to Manns Harbor.

US 64

Here is the end of US 64 and former end of US 264.  There used to be an End 64 sign; however, as you can see,  the END 64 sign is missing.  The left fork is for West US 158.  If you were to go  to the right, you would come to the light for NC 12 North/South.

These signs note the beginning of US 64 & 264.  US 264 has a short life compared to US 64.  264 will end at I-440 in Raleigh.  64 continues much further to its end in Teec Nos Pos, Arizona.  Now compare the above shot to the Summer 2002 photo that shows only the 'Begin' West US 64.

US 158

This light signifies the west end of US 158.  If you were to go straight you are now on NC 12 South.  Take a left and you will find yourself on NC 12 North.  You can't take a right turn at this intersection.  It is the aforementioned ramp from US 64/264 to NC 12.

Here is the first US 158 sign that you will find if you were coming from NC 12 North or South. (The above intersection)

US 264

In the late summer of 2002, NCDOT opened the Virginia Dare Bridge, a four lane crossing from Roanoke Island to the mainland at Manns Harbor.  As a result, US 64 was moved to the new bridge, the old routing of US 64 which includes the crossing to the north was redesignated as Business US 64, and finally US 264 Eastern Terminus was truncated to Manns Harbor.

We're on the mainland now and a left turn at this intersection begins US 264 West.

Here is a view of the terminus.  A wider US 264 shield is used and the 'END' sign does exist.
