US 52
Nationally, US 52 is one of those odd diagonal routes that in some states
signed as 'North/South' and in others 'East/West'. In North Carolina,
US 52 is a 'North/South' route. Highway 52 runs through the
central piedmont. Running from the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains
in Mount Airy southwards through Winston-Salem and through the textile
and furniture towns of Lexington and Salisbury until heading into South
Carolina south of Wadesboro.
US 52 has one bannered route within North Carolina - Business US 52
in Mount Airy. The main highway is known as By-Pass US 52.

US 52 is a two lane highway within Virginia. Once the highway hits
the North Carolina State Line, it becomes a four lane divided highway.

Once entering Virginia, US 52 begins a long climb to Fancy Gap and I-77.
