US 421
US 421 is the longest running North-South US highway
in North Carolina. Running from the southeast corner of the state,
Fort Fisher, and running northwesterly to Tennessee (northwest of Boone),
this highway also runs through the city limits of North Wilkesboro, Winston-Salem,
Greensboro, Sanford and Wilmington. Being one of the more important
corridors in the state, there are many freeway and expressway segments
to this route whether recently opened within the past decade, under construction,
or planned for the future. If you have any additional photos or information
for this page, please e-mail me.
National Southern Terminus: Fort Fisher
(Matt Sides)
The route that begins in Michigan City, Indiana has a seaside ending for
the southern terminus in Fort Fisher. US 421 formally ends at the
Ft. Fisher-Southport Ferry that connects the two locations by crossing
the Cape Fear River.

Standing opposite of the 'END' US 421 shield is a 'BEGIN' North US 421
combination.
