US 401
US 401 is one of the many branches of US 1 that exist
in North Carolina (301, 401, 501, 601 & 701). It is also the
youngest US Highway in North Carolina being first signed in 1957.
It replaced former US 15-A that ran along the same alignment. US
401 has three business routes located in Fayetteville, Raeford,
and Laurinburg. US 401 business in Fayetteville is quite unique as
it is also routed along a freeway. Nationally, US 401 runs from Interstate
85 near the Virginia Line to Sumter, South Carolina. If you have photos
of any of the ends or anything else pertaining to US 401, please
e-mail me.
National Northern Terminus: Near Pashall
(JP Nasiatka)
The final few miles of US 401 is multiplexed with US 1, the second time
these two routes come together in the state, to Interstate 85 (Exit 233)
which is the new Northern Terminus of US 401. Until 2001, US 401
had ended in Norlina at US 1/158. That terminus did not have an 'END'
sign.

This sign combination marks the beginning of Business US 401 South in Raeford.
The Raeford Bypass outdates US 401 as this was once Business US 15-A.
