US 311

Highway 311 is one of the four US Highways that run only in North Carolina.  It also does not touch its parent route US 11, which doesn't even enter our fair state.  It doesn't even end at a mainline US Highway; rather, both termini are with different versions of US 220 Business.  In 2003, the state petitioned to AASHTO to extend US 311 to Eden along NC 135 and NC 770. (Map shown at right.)  The petition was accepted but nearly four years later, as of October 2007, US 311 still has not been signed beyond Madison to Eden. The US 311 extension from Madison to Eden.

When US 311 is finally signed to Eden, it will end here at NC 14.  US 311 will follow from Madison NC 135 to NC 770 where it will follow NC 770 East, later picking up NC 87 North, to end at the photo you see above.  As late as October 2007, the US 311 extension (shown above on NC Official State Maps) still has not been signed.

The Northern Terminus of US 311 is in Madison at US 220 Business and NC 704. It looks like that the 'END' sign was to originally read 'ENDS'.
