NC 97 was originally NC 95. This designation changed with the birth
of I-95 in the late 1950s.

The Western Terminus of NC 97 is at Business US 64 near Lizard Lick.
Business 64 East dips south to Wendell. Bearing right at this odd
intersection leads back to the mainline US 64, about 2 miles further west,
and to Raleigh. NC 97 from Lizard Lick to Zebulon was at one time
US 64.

This photo shows another look at the Western Terminus of NC 97 from US
64 Business East. It is an interesting example of how a former fork
in the road has turned into a signalized intersection.

The Eastern Terminus of NC 97 is at NC 122 in Hobgood.
NC 97's terminus is just shy of the Northern Terminus of NC 122, which
would be behind the above photo. There is not an 'END' sign present
at this point.
