NC 540 is North Carolina's newest state route number. The highway
was first signed in July 2007 when the latest segment of the Raleigh Outer
Loop opened. The route was originally to be named Interstate 540,
and in fact I-540
signs had already been installed on the new freeway. However,
the possibility of the Outer Loop being a toll highway caused I-540 to
become NC 540.

The Western Terminus of NC 540 is at NC 55 in Carpenter.
Although NC 540 runs more North/South it is signed as East/West.
At this time there is not an 'END' NC 540 shield posted at the terminus.

From NC 55 East, a left turn puts you onto NC 540 East.

The Eastern Terminus of NC 540 sits on the Durham/Wake County Line.
In the photo above, I am on I-540 West as it transitions to NC 540 West.
There currently is not any notification that I-540 changes to NC 540 at
the terminus.

It is not until one mile after the beginning of NC 540 does the first West
NC 540 shield appear. The interchange in the background is the Davis
Drive Interchange.
