The Western Terminus of NC 279 is at NC 150 in Cherryville.

The Eastern Terminus of NC 279 is at the South Carolina State Line near the Daniel J. Stowe Botanical Garden south of Gastonia.  An 'END' sign is not present here.  NC 279 does not continue as SC 279.

Although on SC 274, there is a TO NC 279 shield; the highway that connects SC 274 to NC 279 is not SC 279.
