The Western Terminus of NC 213 is rather questionable. Up until 2002,
the NC State Map showed NC 213 continuing west on US 25-70 towards Walnut
and possibly Hurricane. The '02 map showed no designation of NC 213
beyond the US 25-70 Bypass. Then in 2003, it returned.
It does appear that NC 213 continues west on US 25/70 and ends in the town
of Walnut. However, could the NC 213 shields on US 25/70 and the
maps showing NC 213 continuing towards Walnut tell the tale of an NC 213
extension that never happened?
In the 1970s, there were plans for NC 213 to be extended over what is
secondary route 1151 through the tiny communities of Barnard, Worley, and
Big Pine before ending at NC 209 at the community of Spring Creek.
While some of SR 1151 was improved, right-of-way issues around Troublesome
Gap halted the improvement project. (1)

Signs show that NC 213 west continues on the Marshall Bypass.

This photo shows the last NC 213 West shield; where NC 213 is supposed
to split off to Walnut there was (as of October 2002) no markings to show
that NC 213 heads into the tiny hamlet. If you are able to further
solve this mystery with photos or additional information from the Walnut
and Marshall area, please e-mail me.

The photo above is on US 25 South US 70 East just before the Marshall Bypass.
This is the first NC 213 East shield.

The Eastern Terminus of NC 213 is at an interchange with US 19/23 in Mars
Hill. There is not an 'END' sign present here.

This sign from old US 19/23 shows the beginning of NC 213.
