Photo by Robert Lee on 6/24/2005. ![]() The Old Mississippi River bridge was opened in May 1930 as a privately-owned toll bridge serving both trains and motor vehicles. On April 30, 1947, it was purchased by Warren County. By 1967, the bonds used to pay for the bridge had been paid off. Thus the toll for vehicles was removed; the train toll remains to this day. As the new I-20 was built south of downtown, US 80 was moved to the new highway; but US 80 remained on the old bridge. When the I-20 Mississippi River bridge was opened in 1972, US 80 was moved from this bridge to the new bridge. The bridge remained opened until 1998, when it was closed to concrete falling from the bridge deck on the Louisiana approach to the main span. On June 24, 2005, the old Mississippi River bridge celebrated its 75th anniversary with a dedication ceremony. For the event, the bridge was opened for pedestrians from the Mississippi side to the western end of the main span. Photo by Robert Lee on 6/24/2005. ![]() Plaque on the bridge. There is a mix of very old signs and newer MDOT signs. The bridge has a maximum height clearance of 11' 6" (sign above the fence) and maximum width of just 18' (old sign on the right).
