U.S. Route 45

Southern Entrance: Wisconsin State Line, south of Watersmeet, Gogebic County. | Northern Terminus: M-64, Ontonagon, Ontonagon County.

Southern Entrance

US 45 passes into Wisconsin south of Watersmeet. Immediately upon crossing the state line, US 45 intersects County Trunk Highway (CTH) B, which straddles the border between Michigan and Wisconsin for a distance of nearly thirty miles before it crosses the state line itself and turns into M-64. The first US 45 South shield into the Badger State stands just after the CTH-B intersection, and the WELCOME TO WISCONSIN sign is soon behind that.

In the northbound direction, the departure of US 45 from the Badger State and corresponding entrance into the Wolverine State is marked by a WELCOME TO MICHIGAN sign, followed closely by the first US 45 North trailblazer.

Northern Terminus

The northern terminus of US 45 is at a downtown Ontonagon intersection that also serves as the northern terminus of M-64, just a few blocks northwest of the western end of M-38. An interesting attribute of this intersection is that the blinker here is attached to a mast arm, as opposed to the typical Michigan standard span wire.

This close-up of the northern end of US 45 reveals that there are additional shields at the intersection itself pointing toward the respective starts of M-64 South and US 45 South. Lake Superior is just behind the large building on the left side of the photo.
