Bonus Coverage

A special granite survey marker stands on the Michigan/Ohio border, in the field just to the west of the M-52/OH 109 transition.  According to Brian Reynolds, the Michigan/Ohio State Line was originally surveyed in the 1820s, but the marks were becoming difficult to find. The entire state line was then re-surveyed in 1915, with granite survey markers placed at every mile of the state line. It appears that half of these markers remain today, 88 years later. The face of the each marker reads the following in the corresponding direction:

North

MICHIGAN

East

STATE LINE

South

OHIO

West

POST #

The number for the POST # refers to the number of miles from that marker to the zero marker, at the point where the Michigan - Ohio State Line meets the Indiana State Line.  In the following photos of the granite surveying marker that is in the field just west of the M-52/OH 109 crossing of the state line, you will note that this is POST 38, meaning this point is 38 miles east of the Indiana State Line.  In the next three photos, Brian provides some different perspectives of this landmark.

This photo shows the north and west faces of the marker. Also provided here is an excellent perspective of the location of the landmark with respect to the start of OH 109 South.

These two photos show M-46 East as it approaches the starting point of M-52 South. M-46 widens from two to four lanes here, and continues as a multi-lane highway on into Saginaw 7 miles to the east.
