Michigan Route 119 |
|
Southern Terminus: US 31, Bayview, Emmet County. | Northern Terminus: C-77, Cross Village, Emmet County. |
|
Southern Terminus |
|
| M-119's southern terminus is at US 31
in Bayview, a hamlet located just to the northwest of Petoskey. PHOTO # 1: Adrian Leskiw, August 24, 2004. |
|
| Featured in this photo is the first
reassurance marker for M-119 North, situated atop a distance sign
showing how far it is via M-119 to the Lake Michigan shoreline
communities of Harbor Springs and Cross Village, respectively. PHOTO # 2: Adrian Leskiw, August 24, 2004. |

|
| Interestingly, along US 31 North
approaching the southern end of M-119, there is not one, but rather two JCT M-119 notations. The first one is a standard JCT M-119 guide
sign, and the second one appears soon thereafter: a black-on-yellow JCT
M-119 supplemental sign to a diamond "signal ahead" warning sign. PHOTOS # 3 - 4: Adrian Leskiw, August 24, 2004. |
|
Northern Terminus |
|
| The northern terminus of M-119 is at
County Designated Highway C-77 (State Rd.) in the community of Cross
Village, one block west of the western endpoint of County Designated
Highway C-66 (Levering Rd.). M-119's northern endpoint also serves
as C-77's northern terminus. The "Scenic Route to Mackinaw City"
mentioned here encompasses a series of roads that wind their way along
or near the Lake Michigan shore line up to the village located at the
northern tip of the Lower Peninsula. PHOTO # 1: Adrian Leskiw, August 24, 2004. |
|
| In this photo is the first shield for
M-119 in the southbound direction, just in front of a brown guide sign
identifying the stretch of M-119 from this point to Harbor Springs as
the "Tunnel of Trees" stretch. The scenic, forested route near the
Lake Michigan shore line is very popular among tourists, but is also
rather substandard for a state highway. Beyond the fact that
shoulders are either very narrow or non-existent, M-119 has no center
line for most of this stretch! The lack of yellow paint in the
middle of the road is illustrated well in this picture. PHOTO # 2: Adrian Leskiw, August 24, 2004. |
|
| Here is the signage facing the end of
C-77 North at the beginning of M-119 South. PHOTO # 3: Adrian Leskiw, August 24, 2004. |
|
| This guide sign assembly stands on the
SB Lake Shore Dr. approach to M-119's northern terminus, identifying the
two options to Harbor Springs: via the inland, straight-shot route of
C-77 (16 miles), or via the scenic but narrow M-119 (20 miles). PHOTO # 4: Adrian Leskiw, August 24, 2004. |
