Previously, M-38 entered into Ontonagon
along River St. Its Western Terminus was at US 45 (Steel St.) at
the southeastern end of downtown. US 45 South went to the left,
while US 45 North continued straight ahead approximately 6 blocks
before it came to an end itself at what was the Eastern Terminus of
M-64 (Ontonagon St.). That intersection was located immediately
east of a swing bridge constructed in 1939 that carried M-64 across
the Ontonagon River. PHOTO # 1: Barry Camp, 5/17/2003. |

In 2006, a new, fixed bridge spanning the
Ontonagon River was constructed about 0.5 mile south of the former
swing bridge. M-64 was re-routed to the south across this new
bridge, and as a result now comes to an end just east of the new
bridge in the southern end of Ontonagon. In conjunction with
this, M-38 itself was routed off of River St. and onto a new alignment
that brings the highway into its current Western Terminus at the
junction of US 45 and M-64, just a few blocks south of the former
Western Terminus of M-38. Please be sure to check out Chris
