A loop route off of M-22, M-109 traverses the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore along the Lake Michigan shore line on the Leelanau Peninsula..

Here are two perspectives of M-22 North as it approaches the starting point of M-109 North.  Even though M-109 follows the Lake Michigan shore line through this area, and M-22 takes a more inland route, M-22 is signed as the mainline route of the Lake Michigan Circle Tour.  M-109 is instead signed as a Lake Michigan Circle Tour Loop Route for its entire length, with special brown markers identifying the route.

The first M-109 North reassurance marker sits atop a guide sign identifying M-109 as the D.H. Day Highway.

Northern Terminus

The northern terminus of M-109 is at also at M-22, this time in Glen Arbor.  The arrow plate beneath the M-22 shield on the M-109 ENDS assembly is incorrect, as M-22 goes both straight ahead and to the right as M-109 comes to an end.  M-22 North is straight ahead, and M-22 South goes to the right.

These M-109 South and M-22 North shields face the M-22 North approach to the intersection that marks the northern endpoint of M-109.
