I-496 has its western
terminus at the I-96 / I-69 multiplex (Exit 95), west of Lansing.
This sign bridge, located 0.25 mile from the interchange, has the lane
distribution signage for west I-496 when it divides into ramps for east
I-96 / south I-69 and west I-96 / north I-69, respectively. Two
lanes are allotted to east I-96 / south I-69, while only one lane
provides access to west I-96 / north I-69. |

Until May 2002, when US 27
still existed in Michigan, it followed I-96 / I-69 through this
vicinity. This photo from 1999 shows that US 27 shields were
affixed to the top of the respective guide signs for I-96 / I-69.
In May 2002, US 27 was truncated to Fort Wayne, Indiana. As a
result, the US 27 shields were removed from atop these guide signs, as
is shown in the previous photo from November 2002. (PHOTO # 2: Chris Bessert | 1999) |

Here is the sign gantry
present at the split of the ramps to east I-96 / south I-69 and west
I-96 / north I-69, respectively. No I-496 ENDS signage is present at the
western terminus. (PHOTO # 3: Don Hargraves | November 2002) |

In 1999, when US 27
multiplexed with I-96 / I-69 through here, respective south and north US
27 shields were attached to the top of these same assemblies at the gore
point. They too were removed when US 27 was eliminated north of
Fort Wayne in May 2002. (PHOTO # 5: Chris Bessert | 1999) |

The first acknowledgement of
the upcoming I-496 interchange on east I-96 / south I-69 is at the
M-43 / BL I-69
interchange (Exit 93), 0.75 mile away. The M-43 interchange marks
the western terminus of the Lansing BL I-69. |

With three through lanes for
I-96 / I-69 in this area, a fourth lane is added when the on-ramp from
east M-43 merges in. It promptly becomes an exit only lane for I-496. (PHOTO # 7: Don Hargraves | November 2002) |

east I-96 / south I-69. (PHOTO # 8: Don Hargraves | November 2002) |

This guide sign announcing
the I-496 interchange, 0.75 mile ahead, is on north I-69, attached to
the Millett Highway overpass. This sign is posted before north
I-69 merges with east I-96. Interestingly, there is no like
advance exit signage for the I-496 interchange on east I-96 at this
point, as of November 2002. (PHOTO # 9: Don Hargraves | November 2002) |

Four lanes result from the
merge of north I-69 with east I-96. The rightmost lane of these four
becomes exit only for I-496. While this is the second guide sign for
I-496 on north I-69, this is only the first one for east I-96. (PHOTO # 10: Don Hargraves | November 2002) |

After multiplexing with
US 127
for its final 3 miles, east I-496 comes to an end at I-96 (Exit 106),
southeast of Lansing. This guide sign on the Dunckel Road overpass
is the first acknowledgement of the upcoming I-96 interchange on east
I-496 / south US 127, 0.75 mile ahead. (PHOTO # 1: John Harmon | September 2, 2002) |

Here is the sign truss
present at the partitioning of the ramps to I-96 from south US 127.
With that, east I-496 comes to an end. As is the case with the
western endpoint, there is no I-496 ENDS signage located at this
terminus, either. (PHOTO # 3: Don Hargraves | November 2002) |

Don points out that drivers
heading north on US 127 will not see any signs alluding to the beginning
of I-496 as they approach the I-96 interchange. The first mention
of I-496 is not until the first westbound reassurance marker, shown
here. (PHOTO # 4: Don Hargraves | March 8, 2003) |
