Background Information

The photograph of the eastern end of US Route 78 shows the view of the South Carolina state line as it is approached from the Georgia side.  The bridge is over the Savannah River, and as you can see, the northbound/eastbound lanes were under construction at the time this picture was taken in the summer of 2003.

The first western end photograph shows the view from westbound US 78 looking into Alabama.  The second photograph shows the view at the same point looking back into Georgia.  Note the stone marker, in the shape of the state, which says “Welcome to Georgia” and has a copy of the old state flag on it.  The third photograph shows the first reassurance shield for US 78 eastbound (it is multiplexed with GA 8 at this point).
