Background Information

The first northern end photograph was taken on northbound GA 4, which turns left at the intersection ahead. The second northern end photograph shows the first reassurance shields on southbound GA 4/US 1/23 Business.  These shields are odd because, while they are green like usual business markers, they lack the word ‘BUSINESS’ on the shields.  The third photograph shows directional signage for GA 4 / US 1/23 at the intersection.  The fourth photograph was taken a little further back, giving a perspective of the third photograph, and another example of the green BUSINESS shields.  The fifth photograph was taken from northbound GA 4 / US 1/23, and the respective southbound business routes leave to the right.  Finally, the sixth photograph was taken of this same intersection from the northbound business routes.

The southern end photograph was taken on northbound US 23 as well, which ALSO turns left at the intersection ahead, as the overhead signage shows.  This intersection holds a lot of memories for me.  There is a Holiday Inn just to the right of this photograph where my family stayed when we had to evacuate from Hurricane Hugo in 1989.  The Golden Isles were spared destruction, though the same could not be said for Charleston, South Carolina and the Isle of Palms.

The second photograph of the southern end shows the signage at this interesction before it was changed by GDOT.  While US 1 and 23 and GA 4 were routed around downtown Waycross in the mid-90s, the signage was not changed to reflect this until late 2002.  The third and fourth photographs show the first two reassurance shields for BUS US 1.  Signage for BUS US 23 and BUS GA 4 is sparse-to-nonexistent on this route.  The fifth photograph shows the signage at the intersection from southbound BUS GA 4, and the sixth photograph was taken on westbound GA 520 / US 82.  The one-lane road heading straight in this photograph allows traffic to travel onto northbound BUS US 23 to reach downtown Waycross.  The seventh and eighth photographs were taken from southbound US 1 / US 23 / GA 4 and eastbound US 82 / GA 520, viewing the southern end of BUS GA 4 / BUS US 1 / BUS US 23.
