GA 177 is an interesting route because it has a large gap in the middle. That gap is necessitated by the Okefenokee Swamp being where the middle of the route would go! Since the second largest swamp in the United States lies there, the route has two branches. From the northern end, the first branch runs from GA 520 / US 82 to the northern entrance to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The second branch begins at the southern entrance to the refuge and heads south to southern Clinch County. The first northern end photograph shows the view from GA 520 / US 82 eastbound. The second photograph shows the same shield assembly in context, and the third photograph shows the view from the northern end of GA 177. The shield across the highway is a US 82 shield with a double-headed arrow below it. There are no other shields alerting motorists to the junction with US 82 on northbound GA 177 at this point, as well as no shields noting GA 520 or the end of GA 177. |
